The UCLA Center for Community Engagement administers the The Astin Community Engaged Scholars program,  which provides a unique opportunity for undergraduates to spend a year learning about, and then conducting, community-engaged research, while receiving a financial scholarship. Since 2020, the Astin Scholars have joined graduate students and community activists in conducting participatory research projects through the Community Scholars program, administered by the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment.

In 2021-22, the Astin Scholars have focused their research on the future of labor within a decarcerated youth justice system in the state of California. In this symposium, the Astin Scholars and their undergraduate colleagues in Labor Studies will present preliminary findings from their research on the emerging Department of Youth Development in Los Angeles County, and how it will encompass frameworks advocated for in the Youth Justice Reimagined report.
