2019 marks UCLA’s centennial and the bicentennial of poet Walt Whitman, the father of free verse and America’s first bard of democracy. Celebrating the radical optimism that links Whitmanto UCLA, students from Writing Programs courses will present original scholarship at Undergraduate Research Week on issues related to the expression of self and community through the arts and humanities. Presentations by undergraduates from diverse majors will include critical inquiries inspired by Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” and Claudia Rankine’s Citizen, as well as original poetry written in the style of these poets.
